I still have power this morning, yeah!! Schools and govt are closed so we are all home, tucked away safely. So naturally, I'm going to quilt. I'm trying to get together some of the blocks I am behind on that have applique in them. I'm looking at C-5 Eye Of The Cyclone, how appropriate, eh? and I didn't even notice the name until I had printed out some of the tips pages so I'll have them hard copy! Anyway, I went to www.dearjane.com and http://thatquilt.blogspot I was surprised to notice that http://thatquilt.blogspot has current posts, as recently as 10/26/2012. I thought it was an old blog. I dont' really 'get it,' is this another group that some people have joined? A long time ago I read a post that seemed to indicate it's by a group that actually know each other and are working on DJ as a group project. I feel like I'm lurking, but it is good to read some of there tips. Any comments? Anyway, now I'm going to go to some of our earlier posts here and look for tips before I decide how I'll tackle this block. Thanks!

Cindy - glad that at this point it seems you are just having some "time off" - I do hope that is all it amounts to for all of you!!!
I posted a very detailed tute for C5 on post#1014
    - this is page #51 the way I have my thread settings [20 postings per page] - so if yours is set the same way, you should be on page 88 when you read this post #1753 - just look at the number in web address just before the html... if it is a smaller number say '44' then you probably have yours set for 40 and you would start looking for the post about page 25.... if you have your posts set 'standard' then you are probably on page 170ish now and should go to 102 or so.

hope it helps! I did some back-basting for that block & really enjoyed it - helps with accuracy. I do think my outer crescent method was easier - it is different. and - let that be the only eye of a storm you encounter this season!

meanwhile... I will try to post those pics again..
those didnt work.... I tried to post the C5 ones again -which worked before but the pics are on my other computer!
    sorry

The second block I finished yesterday was H1.

Once again, I decided against paper piecing. sure - the exact block piece measurements are not 'nice' - you can still make your adjustments easily by taking a couple of threads over a 1/4" seam.

I started the center 4-square section by cutting a strip each of background and print - 1 3/8" x 2 3/4" - sewed long sides together, cut in half, made 4-square. The center 4-square finishes just shy of 1 5/8" square. It's only a thread off. Cut two pieces 2 1/8" x 1 3/8" for opposite sides of 4-square and give it a good 1/4" seam. When you press it, you will see the thread takes in just slightly more. Cut & sew the two remaining sides in the same manner - as I wrote in drawing 'just under 3 3/4" ' ..this is the cut measurement. For those 8 setting triangles, I cut four 1 3/4" squares once diagonally, sew one on either side of those corner pieces. To cut the corner pieces - I actually used the corners of a 10" 'cake square' civ war fabric I noticed that the "height" of the piece with seams from the corner point to 1/4" below the straight seam line are both slightly shy of 2 1/4" .... you can get this by measuring 3 1/4" from the corners if you want. I just made sure my sides were even and came down 2 1/4" from the point and cut down 1 1/8" from the center line created. [sorry - I'm so mathematical - I dont want to confuse... hopefully the pictures will help] Note that the lines on the edge of the corners match up real well with the seams around the 4patch center. Also, I took a little more seam off the funky corner than the setting triangle.

Hope it all helps - dont let it confuse!
    Gus

The names of the blocks are listed in the book under the number. When you use DJ software the name shows up when you hover your cursor over the block. Go to the block library--> center blocks --> row C --> when you hover over C5 the name 'eye of a cyclone' shows up
Actually - go to Dear Jane Home - click on "The Blocks" - this will give you a full list. Numerical gives it to you per row. Alphabetically ...obvious - by name of block. Then there's also by difficulty level. This is the listing I used when I decided on the schedule to follow. I took suggestions from past DJ 'starters' who suggested going in order would give you a clearer picture of your progress. With that in mind, I tended to start with the beginner blocks as the rows progressed.

Came on board to see if any East-coasters are lurking...... hope you all keep your electricity, sanity, health, and homes!!

    G-1 Hattie's Hen House

Luckily, my power only flickered on and off for about an hour last night. Branches down, but no trees down. Hope everyone else is safe.

I was able to do a little catch up and finish these blocks last night and this morning.

Nice blocks, Gus. Thanks for posting pics and instructions.
