I had read previously about toothpicks and have some on my machine. I'll try this today with the new block. Thanks I hope it helps since I haven't had a leaf or flower petal look right yet!

Sometimes I will add some fill light from Picassa when I load them onto the computer too. It just depends. I'm not sure you need to "pose" them on the velvet. For your black background, you might rather use a white sheet.
all great tips, Patti, thanks! I'll try the sheet too...outside.
I love outside pictures! Nature seems to know how to give great lighting.

If this was clear as mud...which I'm sure it is...I'll try to take some pics tomorrow to show you.
oh, but that's GOOD mud! I had that idea in my head, but now I have confirmation! and it wasn't my question, lol!

    Why mousie, Thank You!
I have been using only my scraps so far and didn't intend to buy anything new for this quilt. So far, so good...

Patti---thanks for this tip. I used it last night to start on block 21(?) and I am much happier. I'm still having problems getting the fit right (I'm not using a pattern or template ) so by the time I stitch down one side, I'm sometimes kinda short on the other...I guess it takes practice.

I'm not doing any of the embroidery as I'm saving these to work on when my sisters and I go on vacation next month. They think I'm crazy, but I know I'll need something to do in the evenings or early mornings.

Rox, I found that when I trace the template on the piece I'm using for the applique AND on the block that I can get it in place better. I stick a pin through a point on the applique piece, then poke the pin through the exact same point on the block..I use at least 2 pins to start with to hold the piece. This helped me tremendously, maybe it will work for you.

    Patti,
I use pins also to hold my piece on the background on which I have traced the pattern. But, still get some shift in my pieces--not all, but some.

It didn't work for me just using the pins Rox...I had to draw the shape on the applique piece so that I could pin the exact points together. Things tend to get a little difficult for me sometimes and it seems that I have to do extra steps to make things work. Oh well...LOL

Well Patti, I tried this today and think it works a little better! I still think the problem is with the "operator" ya know? Maybe by the time we finish I'll know how to do it.

I'm a tell you what...it is so fantastic to get all the tips and tricks you guys so generously share, but it also helps me a lot, to know that even the "cream of the crop" quilters have to do some of the quirky things I do!
I love you guys for making me feel a little more normal, lol!
I've always thought I was slower at doing things, bc I seem to have to go the long, hard way around...fussy, just too finicky, I s'pose! :XD:
I played with fabrics earlier and got all the colors stacked,...lots of 'em...now to do the 'weeding'...for me, it's not what I use, it's what I take away, and don't use...that's hard...I want them all!
Once I get one done...I know I'm gonna be eating, sleeping and breathing this stuff...I can feel it coming on! :XD: :XD: :XD: woo hoo!
