I haven´t tried that, it would have probably been better but the thread I have just didn´t want to coóperate for hand sewing.

Its' bad enough for me to learn applique, without having to do the embroidery by hand as well. The bobbin work goes together quickly, and DH helps me wind the bobbins - so far have used 6 skeins of the DMC and there is lots of waste.
