Apples and Pears = Stairs. My dad always sent me to bed by telling me to get up the Apples and Pears.

    Whistle and Flute = Suit.

    Dog and Bone = Phone

Just a few off the top of my head, I'll think about some more. Often, they were shortened, so you wore a Flute which was a Suit, and you got on the Bone to speak to someone.

I think I have a little book of them somewhere, I'll have to look for it.

I can think of one Cockney phrase at the moment (just got up got brain freeze)
"get up the apple and pears"

Used to say that to the kids my husband did, means "get up the stairs"

i willprobably think of some others my husband was a true cockney which means he was born within the sound of Bow Bells, a church in the area called St Mary le Bow

OK, you asked for it - here is my haul from this trip to Abluquerque. Doean't look like $250, does it? The fabric on the ends are on bolts as they are 3 1/2 yards of the green & 4 yards of the creamy one. In the middle are 1/2 yard cuts of a few more greens & 2 reds. The calendar is for the door prize bag for September's club meeting as I won it this month. There is a pattern for a small wall hanging, "Ascension Morning" is the big first day of the Albuquerque Balloon Feista when all balloons are inflated at dawn, so that the fires cause a glow inside each balloon. Decided I needed it! There is the book, 'Rose of Sharon Block Book. 2 Pairs of Karen Kay Buckley scissors & the pink Add-A-Quarter ruler - got 2 as someone from club asked me to get her 1 too.

LOL Elle!!!! Why do they take 1 word and make it into 2 words or more of a tongue twister??? LOL!

We Americans are much lazier...like we are too lazy to actually say McDonald's, so we say Micky's...too lazy to say Walmart...we say Wally's....we shorten so many words..fabulous to fab..disrespecting- dissing..I could go on...but I'm too lazy! :)

Kathy, we were posting at the same time! I love those greens...I agree, sadly, that doesn't look like $250...but then you do have some yardage on those bolts..so that makes it more :) Its all in all a great looking haul!

Lesley that label has come up beautifully, it sure will add that finishing touch to the quilt.

Kathy, think of it this way - you got a much, much bigger haul than I would have for the same money over here, so you did good.

I forgot - I kept thinking there was more to my purchases - remembered when i walked by it. Didn't wash it or the background fabric as they aren't batiks & I won't do them until I actually use them. Anyway I had seen this fabric in the Hancock's of Paducah & fell in love with it. I only got 1 1/2 yards, but that's enough for a backing for a small quilt - or maybe something in the front.

I think the Mexican way of dealing with death is actually very healthy. Their Day of the Dead celebrates the life of the deceased. This fabric is a hoot!

Good haul Kathy, love all your colourways, but not for me the white and black fabric.

i haven´t got any posh scissors however all he ladies at my club discovered that the really cheap chinese shops have a pair of scissors and wow are they sharp and really good.... cost 2 Euros, so they keep me happy.

No cheap ones here Elle, but I might ask for some of those serrated ones for Christmas - that's a good idea, isn't it?

Nice haul Kathy - you still didn't mention the Avante - didn't you see one?

How about the Cockney slang - I knew a lot of them, but just didn't remember - my Dad used to say most of them at various times. I think it was almost regarded amongst Cockneys as a language of their own that could confound outsiders.
