I'm so happy to see I'm not the only one who has started this project late!

I used Steam a Seam 2 to secure the large hearts to the black background not realizing how much it would gum up my needle, so I can't do the embroidery in those hearts. That's OK with me, because the fabric is busy enough and no one will miss them. I also chose not to do the gold embroidery around the outside edge of those hearts. It really doesn't need it with the blanket stitch.

So what I did first is attach the purple to the green with a blanket stitch, then SAS the green/purple to the black fabric. I used SAS to attach the outer hearts, then did the gold embroidery by hand. After that, I put a piece of batting and muslin behind it and stitched around the green leaves, yellow center and outer hearts. I really like it!

Steam a seam actually works best - allowing more pliability of your fabric if you trim it to within 1/4" of inner edge of applique. I trace pattern on to SAS -trim about 3/16" on either side of tracing line then lay it carefully on back of my fabric and lightly press, then I cut exactly on line, remove paper and press onto background. the edge of applique will still gum up your needle and it will need replacing or cleaning periodically, but you can embroider the inside more easily without a problem.

your hand embroidery looks wonderful!! [I would imagine your hand applique would rival Aie's too ;) ]

now who is Beth?? in our group? how fun to have someone closeby - been tryin to get my quilting buddies interested in this

Wonderful job, your blanket stitch is superb and love the color choice and the hand embroidery. Ah! I like it all!
I did the same I used batting before I attached the appliques so it is pre-quilted. It doesn't really show much but I guess once it is put toghether it will work.

How are you planning to saw the blocks together?

I just posted #11 my second block. Waiting for you on the other thread. Happy appliqueing!

Beth is a good friend of mine who lives close by. We are in the same quilting group and do tons of sewing stuff together. She has a real good eye for color, so she's been picking out my colors. This quilt is not her style so she won't be doing one for herself. She is a wonderful quilter and an excellent knitter. She knits all kinds of things from starfish to crocodiles to scarves that look like a long slice of pepperoni pizza.

Thank you for the compliments on my block! I'm doing the second block now and will post it when it's done.

I'm planning on sewing them together with a 1" piece of black so that the batting from each of the blocks will touch each other on the back side.
