I will take a picture and see if you can get any ideas.
3 and 3/4ths will work just fine. you might have a teeny tiny bit hanging off one or both ends but you can just trim that back. (i have to confess, i always need an extra little bit, anyway, to ensure i can trim back to the accurate size when working with anything on an angle. )

there's an easier way to cut those pieces.
-cut 2" strips the width of the fabric
-hack off one end at a 45 degree angle
-measure and cut from the bottom.

the illustration shows 2-3/4ths inches because that's the size you'll need for the 12" optical x block.

I really appreciate your taking the time to identify the confusion those instructions can cause. It helps me improve future files. :-)

    Hi Patrice:
I tried to open your Optical X box and all I got was a black square on the screen???? I have never seen this before. Usually I can download things and see them just fine except for the McCall patterns!!!! .

if you mean you tried to open the file i posted a few message up on this page, i fixed it. when posted files are too big, they cause all kinds of problems for folks who try to download or view them - especially if they have dial-up access to the internet. i accidentally posted the big copy this morning instead of the copy i'd compressed for the website.

guess i should have had one more cup of coffee before i tried to do anything.

you should now see the whole illustration right here on the page instead of just the file name and download link.

if you mean something else, please specify.
