Please Note: The measurements given here are the exact numbers.
Trimming these HST's after sewing them might make them smaller-
you really do want them to be squared.
Therefore I recommend cutting them a teeny bit large and always sew a scant 1/4.
".
Hint. I lay out all the pieces of the blocks arranging them as they would be when sewn on a large paper plate.
after sewing the sections they go back on the plate keeping them where they are supposed to be--when I need to press,
I carry the plate to the ironing board. Just don't move too quickly--they may fly off the plate..
BLOCK # 7
1. Light. Template # 8 Cut - two 3- 7/8" squares cut in half diagonally.
2. Light. Template #13 Cut - a strip 1 7/8" x 12 1/2 " cut every 1 7/8" to get your 6 squares.
Mark diagonally on wrong side with sharp pencil from corner to corner. DO NOT CUT IN HALF.
3. Dark. Template # 13 Cut- 2 strips 1 7/8" x 12 1/2" stack the strips and cut every 1 7/8" to get your
12 squares. Take 6 squares and cut them in half diagonally-set aside. leave remaining
squares whole.
4. Take 6 light T#13 squares and 6 dark T#13 squares- place one of each=-right sides facing.
Sew a seam 1/4 " on each side of the marked line then cut in half on the marked line.
VERY IMPORTANT: press seam- flip open, pressing to dark side.. SQUARE UP this little
block to the correct 1 1/2" square measurement. Even here I would trim a shade larger.
5. HINT: After sewing the Template # 13 triangles-it becomes a larger triangle.
Take the paper template # 8 and place it on the section you have just completed.
This is where adjustments should be made before continuing.
After joining the 2 above triangles (fabric) square them up--it really helps in finishing the block.
When joining 2 of the squares- right sides facing- line up your "birds" so that when you open
the piece the "birds" are in a straight line across.

Block # 8
1. Dark Template # 8 Cut one 3-7/8" square- cut in half diagonally.
Put 1 aside to use in step. 3.
2 .Light Template #7 Cut one strip 2-3/8" x 9-3/4" long. cut into 4 2-3/8" squares then in half
diagonally. you will only use 7 of these.
3. Dark Template #7 Take the leftover triangle from step 1 to trim out T #7.
4. Light Template #17 cut one strip 2" x 10" cut in half to get 2 2"- x 5" rectangles.
5. Med Template # 16 cut one strip 2" x 7-1/2" fold in half, crease fold, place template T#16 correctly.
cut correct angles. You now have the 2 pieces for this color
6. Med/Dark Template #16 R Repeat step 5 for this step.
Hint. 1. When sewing the little triangles (T#7) to T#16 & T#16R you will be doing so on the long side of T#16 & T#16R .
. Just make sure it's the correct side.
