Happy Mother's Day to all.

It rained here all morning and into the afternoon. I was sick in the night so took a good 2 hr nap this morning....still feeling a bit blah. Then I went into MIL's w/DH and DS to put a small slab of concrete at the bottom of the front landing/steps they put up last fall. My job was carrying water to mix up the concrete...fun, fun.

Jeanie--sounds like you have a nice trip planned. Our trips are usually there and back because the kids have to get back to work and DH is home w/the dogs and ready for a break. This year we've already been to Makato, MN, Lancaster PA and Vegas for indoor archery tournaments. This spring we went to Phoenix, AZ for the first of many outdoor tournaments. We still go to FL, CA, NC, OH, and TX...driving to all except Vegas and CA.

Sue--I can't wait to see your FW30s blocks in rows. Those blocks look great! I like your choice of cream/yellow setting triangles. Good helper you have there!

Bev, what are coping strips? Never heard of such...

Jeanie, have a safe and very fun trip! When you mentioned Pismo Beach it made me remember a Bugs Bunny cartoon, where he was tunneling underground and trying to come up at Pismo Beach! So I guess it's a real place....

Today at our quilt meeting I got to visit with FatCat... the hostess's kitty. She is as big as a basketball in the middle, which makes her skinny tail look dwarfed. And she doesn't walk... only waddles. She's the sweetest, friendliest girl, tho, and let me play with her with one of her toys.

One of the quilters told of a fabric store closing... nearly 2 hours south of us. She was going, as they had clearance pricing until the closing. On a 'wild hair' I decided to tag along and off we went on a *road trip*! I did buy some pretty stuff, but not the bonanza I was hoping for. Anyway it was fun to hit the road to see a shop I'd never been to. We had a good lunch together, too. Fun day.

Coping strips are tiny strips of fabric used to join the QAYG blocks together.
In this case I am using 1" strips for the front. Once the quarter inch is sewn on the first block & then the quarter inch is sewn onto the second bock that leaves 1/2" that covers the seam allowances.
On the back however I cut 1 1/2" strips & fold those in half to get 3/4" strips. I sew the raw edge to the first block at the same time as I sew the 1" strip on the front. Once the second block is sewn to the front I then fold the back piece over & it is now a half inch piece & I hand sew that to the second block at the fold.
I don't guess this makes since w/o picts, now does it?

Now that I am sure what Bev means by coping strips, here is a quilt I made with them doing quilt as you go...the small purple "sashing" are the joining strips.

Yes those are coping strips Carrie. That is a sweet purple quilt!

That's ok Bev... that's the way I do it too, just never heard the term "coping strips" before. I just call them narrow sashing strips. You learn something new every day!

I've also heard the term coping strip when you have several blocks and they aren't all the same size. By sewing a strip around each one (say about an inch), then cutting all the blocks the same size, one doesn't notice the slight differences in the original block sizes. I've used coping strips around pre printed panels to make them an even size as well.

I don’t hand stitch the strips closed on the back. I sew so that the open strip is on the front, then I narrowly top stitch it down. It saves a ton of time.
