OK, after making this block, I have a question about the instructions.
Instead of cutting triangles for the corners, I want to cut 2 squares (of the 2 different fabrics), mark corner to corner and sew 1/4" on either side. Then cut on the mark and presto, you have 2 triangle corners. My question is: what size block would I need to cut???

That is how I did mine. I used the size it called for but that doesnt leave any fudge room so you could go up to 4" or even 4 1/4" if you wanted.

all we have here are perfect examples of fabrics taking control and doing as they please. with wonderful results. :-)

When I pulled the fabric, I intended for the pink to be the background but between then and the actual cutting, I got discombobulated!!!

All the blocks are looking good! Joyce, I cut mine 4" and used the method you mentioned. I don't like cutting the triangles first and then making the hst units. I get them all wonky when I do that.

Sewjoyce,
You are getting the pattern directions from the Quilter's Cache site, right?
Marcia gives directions for cutting a 3 7/8" X 7 3/4" rectangle of each color. Instead of cutting the rectangle in half and then into hst, I put the two rectangles together. Then on the back of the lighter piece I marked lines to divide the piece:
I put a horizontal line at 3 7/8" and then on the diagonal from a corner to the horizontal line for each square. I then sewed 1/4" on each side of the horizontal lines. I cut the rectangle on the horizontal line and on each of the diagonal lines. Presto! 4 triangle corners. My triangle corners came out exactly 3 1/2" - to my surprise. :D
Marcia uses this method often when giving directions for her blocks. The trick here is getting the right measurements.
