I just saw this on another blog, I know rail fence is the name, but this was done in baby colors and called baby steps! I just loved that! I have twin grandsons coming and I believe this will be the ones I will do for them.

I completed this block but it measures 13" instead of 12.5. Are the instructions accurate? Or did I measure incorrectly? Would appreciate anyone's help with this. http://www.quiltaholics.com/bom/fencrl.htm
    Thanking you all in advance.

the instructions seem accurate. in some ways, this block isn't as easy as you'd think it would be to get exactly right. because it's such a simple design, gafarbles scream out from across the room. (mine do, anyway. hopefully yours are better behaved. )

i have serious problems trying to cut or sew accurately across the whole width of the fabric. i don't even try anymore. i divide the fabric in half first by tearing it lengthwise down the middle. depending on the size pieces i need to end up with, i sometimes divide each of those halves lengthwise, too. if not, i fold them carefull so i'm still only cutting along an 11" stretch and sewing down a 22" stretch.

it's also important in a block like this to measure the stripes after pressing to make sure they're even and correctly sized.
