I scaled my block down to 12" by using tupperware lids and plates. :D

I appliqued it, but haven't sewn it on since I used the heavy duty stuff (to get rid of it) and used up some scraps. i did try the turn through stuff on two of the little circles, but it looked icky, so I just went with regualr applique on the rest.

Good to see you found a way that worked for you (that's all that matters anyway). I'm looking forward to seeing it done. :D

If I might offer a "help" for those who want to do hand applique with the edges turned under.. I've found it helpful to cut a template of thin cardboard 1/4" smaller than the piece of fabric.. stitch a running stitch for a drawstring around in the "seam allowance." draw it up and anchor it.. then press. you can then remove the cardboard, you have a perfectly round circle with the allowance turned under.
Does that make any sense at all?

Sounds like a great tip. I'll have to try it in my "spare" time.

Try using butcher paper instead of thin cardboard. You can iron it to the wrong side of fabric (cut it 1/4 inch smaller than your fabric circle), press your s/a over to the back and then "running stitch" around leaving a small opening to remove the paper almost at the end of your completed circle. You get a good edge. I run a pencil around inside to loosen the paper from fabric and then use tweezers to pull out the paper (throw it away!) Hope this is clear!
