The New Farmers Wife '30's Quilt-Along

Still waiting for my book but watching all these notes I question if I as a beginner, almost a little better can do this or not, I really want to have all my fabric washed and pressed just waiting to start

Teri, I'm a beginner too. Some of these blocks are easy and some are challenging, but I'm sure we can do it. I appreciate having the more experienced PP'ers here to help us if we have trouble.

Okay, I have block #12 figured out...no need to mirror the 2 small pieces..All you have to do is to switch the fabric choices..I have it colored in
#1 this is how it's shown... pardon my artwork
#2 this is how it should look.
#3 these sides joined.
the rest , just follow the pattern..

Hi Can I join? I have just received my book and can't wait to start but I am a bit worried as I haven't done paper piecing before. Quick question- should I still be allowing quarter inch seam allowance or because of the size of the pieces would an eighth of an inch be better?

Cath, welcome and I think you'll do fine with pp. I never did it before the FWS Pony Club quilt along and now it's my favorite method. I went to Carol Doak's website and followed her directions for getting started--she has some very simple sample blocks to start with. After doing a few of these, I dove right in.
As for seam allowance, I think most of us on here agree that 1/8" seam allowances don't work as well--they're harder to press flat and create extra bulk in the seam allowances (I know that sounds counter-intuitive but they leave a lumpy seam). 1/4" seam allowances press and stay flat.
Please ask any questions--these ladies on this thread have lots of experience and love to get others on board paper piecing.

Do not worry about each block until time to do them and it will all make more sense then...it even sounds as clear as mud now to me. But I know as I do each one, it will make more sense then... so welcome one and all to our new adventure. Our leader and others will answer each question ask and away we all will go with a smile.
