I made about 24 at Christmas time, and 6 just last week. I just quilt an "X" from corner to corner (as if I was doing a rag quilt) instead of stippling. And I don't draw any lines, just fold and measure. Be sure to measure from the edge of the fabric, not the edge of the batting. I mark 3/4" from the fold, and 2-1/4" from the edge. You don't need to backstitch from the edge, but do backstitch at the point at the fold.
Be sure to use 100% cotton batting. And I have read where some have caught fire, but that's because they were left in the microwave too long. I don't put one in the microwave for over 4 minutes, and it usually only takes 2-3 minutes to warm something up. And they are good for protecting your hands from cold foods (like ice cream), too. I also make these for sale and have sold well over a hundred. My only problem has been with those making them from "100% cotton", usually Warm and Natural batting. If you read the fine print you will find the normal scrim/glue/poly additives present in most batting. It is NOT 100% cotton. There is a special batting made for the microwave without the 'additives' and a little prevention could go a long way!
