Giquilt, you spoiled Sylvia :D :D Lovely blocks!

giquilt 02-25-2014 07:44 PM

Thanks Anael!

Geri B 02-26-2014 05:19 AM

I really would like to do this, I like the blocks in this book BUT, the size of the blocks with all that is going on in each is a bit taunting to me....is there a software program that accompanies this that would enlarge the blocks? Just wondering...

Anael 02-26-2014 05:27 AM

There's no software like Dear Jane but you can redraw the blocks in EQ.

thimblebug6000 02-26-2014 07:26 AM

giquilt, great blocks, fun idea for the wedding ring!

Geri B. you can just google each block for a 12" version to see if there's a freebie out there; quilterscache.com has an excellent section on different sizes and also http://www.mccallsquilting.com/Block_Reference.html

Geri B 02-27-2014 06:54 AM

Thanks for the ideas on resizing. Will see what I can find in those sources..and try on EQ too.

Wow! What a great selection of blocks. Thanks for sharing.

I just read all the PM replies I've been getting to the 136 I sent out to let people know about the new DJ thread starting... QuiltingNinaSue told me she had lots of irons in the quilting fire, one of which was here with Sylvia and Anael!! I remember some of us talking about doing this one together... probably good I didnt find out sooner because I'm not sure I could fit this in now either. However the blocks I saw are awesome!!! very very pretty :)

I saw a note early on - someone asking Dotty about her design wall created by Sharon Mastbrook. This designwall is actually still part of the DJ software. If you have the software, you have the capability of using it. I suppose you could also tweak it for Sylvia .... you would have to cheat a little - by naming your sylvia blocks "mya1....through....mym13" to replace the placement of DJ blocks. If anyone has the DJ software and can't figure out how it's done, PM me if this doesn't make sense.

Happy sewing!!
Gus

Anael 03-04-2014 11:40 AM

I use Excel sheets for Sylvia and DJ and I do have the DJ software.

Karen G 03-05-2014 06:24 AM

I'm back at home in Michigan after a week in sunny Florida visiting my son and his wife. Now I'm ready to get back to sewing. Will post pix in a day or so.

Anael. This may be a foolish question, but I am not that saavy with Excel anymore. Is it possible to switch the letters to the left column, and the numbers across the top? That would keep it more organized for me, definitely.

Good question.... if it is possible I'll be changing mine. I just added in the letters as my first column, but it's not as sleek as it could be if they can be reversed.

Anael 03-05-2014 11:45 PM

I don't know, will try to find out if it's possible.

Okay, I asked my "techno-geek" son, and he said he has never known it to be capable of switching the two, but he is going to check into it. If he finds a way, I'll let everyone know. In the meantime, I just set up the boxes like the chart in the book, and will just plug the pics in over them as I go.

wump 03-07-2014 10:05 AM

I have been following along doing the blocks. Wasn't a member but than...paper piecing is new for me and now i'm stumped. i understand the way its done when i did mosaic3 and mothers delight my seams don't go opposite directions. Where did i go wrong? I did kansas troubles using Anael's pdf and it turned out so nice. Thanks Anael for sharing.

Anael 03-07-2014 10:10 AM

Wump, do you have pictures of mothers delight? That way we might see what's wrong.

wump 03-07-2014 12:02 PM

Yes but i don't know how to get them on here. One of the reasons I only looked instead of becoming a member sooner. Computer or should I say tablet doesn't come easy. My writing skills are not the best. Will try to figure out adding photos.

Anael 03-07-2014 12:22 PM

wump, do you know how to email pictures with your tablet? If so I'll PM you and give you my email address

wump 03-07-2014 01:23 PM

Can't believe I was able to do that:eek: Maybe there is hope after all

Anael 03-08-2014 07:34 AM

YOu managed posting pictures, great :) :)
Seams going the wrong way is my problem too with PP. I try to iron them the right way after sewing or iron them open, that way you won't have that problem.

Thanks Anael for the offer of doing the email, must say i'm not much better in that department. Was happy I figured out how to post a picture. I'm going to try and post another one with red x's on some of the problem areas. I can't press the seams to one side or open because of the seam sewn and the paper. I sure don't like both seams going the same direction. I didn't have that problem with your foundation for the kansas troubles block. All the seams nested correctly.

MamaHen 03-08-2014 09:59 AM

Wump..I'd press some of those seams open, it will help take some of the bulk out of the crossed seams.

Anael 03-08-2014 10:19 AM

I would press some of the seams open too. With Mother's Delight after sewing one section together you can press the middle seam open. Or don't sew into the 1/4" seam in the middle of the block. When you sew all sections together the seams will open like a flower and lay flat. Does it make sense? I don't know how to explain otherwise.

QuiltingNinaSue 03-08-2014 10:38 AM

Wump, try this: after sewing the one fourth inch seam, take the paper off of that seam (just the quarter inch seam outside), and finger press it open before sewing the next seam, and so on. When you finish and take off paper, spray with Best Press and touch it with an iron to press open the seams. Don't iron by pressing down and moving sideways, just touch the seam with the iron, lift up and come straight down to touch the seam again. It will press out beautifully that way.

wump 03-08-2014 10:44 AM

Thanks MamaHen. :o I don't think I'm going to be a fan of pp

wump 03-08-2014 12:51 PM

Thanks Anaeland QNS I'll do that on the seams I can on these two blocks and call it good. Future blocks will receive the treatment suggested. QNS I am guilty of ironing instead of pressing:o To many years of sewing and still iron DH shirts. I do try to press though

Wow wump, those are beautiful and such lovely fabrics!!

MamaHen 03-08-2014 01:50 PM

Wump, those are just great, you have done a fine job, don't give up on pp yet, practice makes perfect ( most times anyway).

QuiltingNinaSue 03-08-2014 02:00 PM

Wump, I do love your blocks you have made. They are going to look very nice in your quilt.

I get to the point of re-doing and grow very weary of the whole thing...and either accept or discard the block! Three or four times ripping is my quota of the day....and in pp, it might be less! And I have never pressed clothes for anyone in the family after pressing DH Air Force uniform in early years of marriage...I bought drip dry only!

mirabelle 03-08-2014 05:04 PM

What a wonderful selection of blocks Wump, I love your pinks and blues, but that mottled pink really has my attention, love it:thumbup: look forward to seeing more of your blocks

giquilt 03-08-2014 08:13 PM

Wump, for a lurker you do beautiful work. Your blocks are great and the pink and blue will be a great quilt! Congrats on the posting. Everyone enjoys pics.

wump 03-08-2014 09:13 PM

Thanks everyone for all the nice compliments. I have cut out everything that can be and put in sandwich bags. Using the left overs from cutting for the paper piecing. Looks like I'm in this to stay.

QNS I think my ripper likes my company.

Ohhhh MamaHen can't give up on the pp have too many Judy Niemeyer patterns. Those seams are so frustrating:o

March Blocks-Week 1-have not trimmed

??? is anyone going ahead and putting sashing on blocks as they go along? I read on someone's DJ that they put sashing as they go. I have not put any on my DJ or SB but when I think about the end I wonder if I should. Might help if a block is a little short

opinions please

QuiltingNinaSue 03-09-2014 06:31 AM

giquilt, lovely job. DJ instructions say to add a slashing around it if it is short...to make the block the size you are using.

thimblebug6000 03-09-2014 08:41 AM

I had thought about adding sashing as I went, but I am using scraps (blues/browns/yellow/beige) so think I'll wait until I have all the blocks done and hopefully come up with a fabric then that will compliment them.
