Clue # 2
Today you make your decision on the A and B fabrics. When you cut colors A and B, I feel color A calls out to be the more dominant of the 2 colors. In my fabric choices from last weeks fabric photo, my gold yardage is color A and the lighter piece is B. (Go down to the scrap alert if you are interested in a completely scrappy quilt.) For those of you undecided on what to use for your fabric, I also included a sample with the color A being a print instead of the solid gold. And if you read under the scrappy section, you will see I used different tone on tones for the 4-½ x 12-½ rectangles. This was just decided a few days ago, long after I posted the first clue.
Color A
Cut 2 WOF 4-½ wide, cut into 12 4-½ squares..
Cut 6 WOF 2-½ wide and cut into 96 2-½ squares.
Color A LARGE SIZE:
CUT 3 WOF 4-½ WIDE, CUT INTO 20 4-½ SQUARES
CUT 10 WOF 2-½ WIDE, CUT INTO 160 2-½ SQUARES
Color B
Fold fabric with selvedges together, cut 6 WOF strips, 4-½: wide. Starting at the selvedge edge, cut off selvedge, then cut at 12-½. Press the remaining piece and cut into a 12-½ wide piece. You will get three 4-½ x 12-½ pieces from each WOF. You will need 17 12-½ strips.
LARGE SIZE: using above cutting suggestion, CUT 11 WOF 4-½ WIDE, CUT INTO 31 12-½ STRIPS
For any one who has never made flying geese, I have numbered the steps from 1 to 4 to give you an idea of how to proceed -- top photo shows different steps for the assembly, and the bottom strip is what you will end up with. You will make 17 of this rectangle. For the LARGE: 31 rectangles
(This is not your traditional flying geese block but will make assembly of your blocks easier and faster.) More information can be found on the web for those who need more detailed directions for the flying geese.
For both sizes of quilt, using the 2-½ color A squares, and the 4-½ by 12-½ rectangles, mark a line on the wrong side of the 2-½ square, sew on the diagonal as shown, press, add the second piece, and repeat in the other corner. And a hint to make sure your points will all be in the correct position: When sewing the 2-½ squares onto the rectangle, sew from one side to the other, NEVER sew from corner toward the inside. I also sew one stitch away from the marked line, on the side toward the corner .
I find it easiest to go through all 17 (or 31) rectangles and place one square on each short side, and sew both pieces. Fold so the corners match, press, then add another 2 square at the other long end, and press.
Take 6 of these 4-½ x 12-½ sections and add a 4-½ square of Color A to one end.
FOR LARGE SIZE - take 12 of these sections and add a 4-½ square of Color A to one end.
The 2nd photo shows you what you will have -- some flying geese strips with a 4-½ at one end, and some strips without the 4-½ block. .
3rd photo
Take 1 of each of these sections, and a 9-patch block. As shown in the third photo, using accurate Ό seams, sew the piece without the 4-½ square to one side of the 9-patch block, then sew the longer section with the 4-½ piece to the other side. Press. You will end up with a 16-½ block. Sew these blocks together, 3 rows of two blocks as shown in photo 4
4th photo
Using photo for reference, take remaining pieces and sew together as shown, then add the short section to the short side of the piece you just assemble, then add the long piece to the long side.
By the time you assemble this 6-block piece and you think, hmmmmm I kinda like this, maybe I should have made it a lap quilt, go ahead and make 6 more of these blocks if you have the extra A and B fabrics to make the amount of pieces called for in the large quilt instructions.
FOR LARGE SIZE:
Take 12 of each of these sections, and the 9-patch blocks. Using accurate Ό seams, sew the piece without the 4-½ square to one side of the 9-patch block, then sew the longer section with the 4-½ piece to the other side. Press. Assemble these units making twelve 16-½ blocks. Sew together the twelve 16-½ blocks, . See 3rd and 4th photos for reference of the 6 blocks - yours will be 4 rows of 3 blocks
Set aside the remaining rectangles and squares until next week.
The 5th photo shows a sample with the stars made out of a bold medium scale print, but I decided against this and used the gold fabric. You may prefer this look and feel free to go with it.
SCRAP ALERT:
1st Idea: All scrappy can be done with a little extra work with the color planning and cutting. The 6th photo shows a dummy I made if I was doing all scrappy in place of the color A. What was the 4-½ square of color A in the original quilt is made using four assorted 2-½ squares to make a 4-patch to take the place of the 4-½ color A block.
2nd Idea: If you look at the picture of the completed piece being done today, in the 5th photo you will see how Color A can be made scrappy, by using 12 assorted 4-½ squares (LARGE SIZE: 20 assorted 4-½ squares) and the accompanying 2-½ squares - eight 2-½ pieces per 4-½ four-patch . However, my thoughts would be to use solids, tiny prints or blenders for the stars and their points, duplicate fabrics would be okay, and Color B will need to make the stars stand out. You will need to do a bit of careful planning ahead on colors to get your star points to be in the proper position, but it works and I was happy with the results
For anyone who is interested: The last three photos show how I am doing my king quilt to make it as easy as possible for me. The 4-½ x 12-½ are rectangles cut from different tone on tone fabrics, and I have used mostly the cream and ivory family with a few white tone on tones about 9 different fabrics. The stars are cut from tone on tone, blenders and a couple of teeny tiny prints. (I think I will probably want to shoot my self in the foot by the time this is done.) First I laid out the 4-½ squares on the floor for color placement. After a lot of pondering and trying things out, I ended up sewing a row at a time. At the left of the photo, you can see the finished strips. I laid out the matching 4-½ block for the star, put down the tone on tone rectangles, put the 2-½ squares on top of the 4-Ό x 12-½ pieces, then put the blocs from the next row on the flannel board, so I could see what else would go on the tone on tones rectangles that were on the board. Added those star points to the large rectangles. Then off to sew the points. The I connected the pieces and sewed another row. My rows are six 9-patch sections long and will be seven sections wide. I wont be talking about this fully scrappy anymore, I think you can see where I was going with my different ideas.
And don't forget - this is a lot of work, and you do this at your own pace. No one will be breathing over your shoulder to get you to sew faster!

Elisab - Yes, Fuji are my absolute favorite eating apple, in the frig all the time. And your blocks won't need fixing, they are going to work out just fine.

Thank you so much Judy! I can see you have put a lot of time and thought into this, with all the different options you have shown. I am really enjoying this ride, and will be choosing my A and B fabrics today so I can get started. I'm looking first in my stash, to see if I have at least one of the fabrics already. If not, I suppose it will be a trip to town for more options. Oh darn!
