Thanks, everyone. Honchey, I didn't do any y-seams. After fiddling with the y-seams for way too long, I appliqued the center instead.

Whatever you did worked out great, katybob. Your blocks look beautiful.

Jan... lovely substitute blocks! They look pretty hard too, esp. the pineapple.

QNS and Ann, just give it a try. I usually do better if I don't know they are "supposed to" be hard!

QNS, the good news is that Peony doesn't have y-seams -- just one tricky little partial seam in the last quarter of the purple square. It's Pharlemia that'll give you fits!

Sorry, Katybob, but its Peony that is giving me fits. The book has one layout, but the paper piecing pattern has it this way which is a number of Y seams to get it together. . . as evidence of above photo. It wil or it won't in the morning.

I did have Y seams in my Peony... but maybe it was because I was trying to just get it together my own way. Couldn't see any way to do it without Y seams. They normally aren't too bad but in this block there were so many seam allowances and intersections that it made it pretty nerve-wracking. Laurie Aaron Hird, what were you thinking???

QNS, those fabrics are going to look really cool together in this block.
