Sounds like it was a great day! I love seeing kids use a sewing machine for the first time.

Wonderful way to get kids interested in sewing machines! I marvel sometimes at what truly marvellous inventions sewing machines are.

The kids were also surprised when they found out one of the machines is 90 years old.

Thanks to your group for doing this. I believe you could take that show on the road by offering it through quilt guilds around the country, or at least they could be inspired by what you did to do something similar on their own. I'm reminded of the "instrument petting zoo" that some orchestra's offer as part of their young people's concerts. I have to be sure to show my 66 hand crank to my grandson. He sort of avoids the more modern machines when I've offered to let him try something (too girly), but just the look of an antique machine might put a different spin on the experience. Also, a crank might be less intimidating. It wouldn't look as if it could run amok on its own.

What a great opportunity for them. Kids need to see and experience "real" sewing machines, not just the plastic junk they see at Walmart. Good job!

"
a crank might be less intimidating" Absolutely, I hear this so often . Iris's Grand daughter wanted to go to a bra making class but hates electrics. She needed a zig zag. hmmm. poor unsuspecting Fleewtwwod/Brother got called into service. She loved it.

In this case, it took two hands to guide the fabric, so the teacher became the power source. She thought it was a hoot.
She runs the make your own bra shop.
