    for the backs you could make a slip cover that only fits inside the vertical wood pieces. it could be shaped curved like the center of the top and tied down at the bottom to keep in place. that way you wouldnt have to worry about those taller wood pieces poking through as people used the chairs. and of course cover the bottom seat area separately too.

    If you recover the seats, it may be enough of a change for you. Add a tablerunner of the same fabric, maybe curtain tie-backs and even new valances. Two candles to match and you have a new diningroom!

    Just cove the wicker part and cusion with some fabric.

    I am sure you would have to sand before you do anything else. Spray painting would be the best method for painting.
