In the process of changing over from a computer room to a sewing room, we pulled up shag carpet that had been down for 35+ years. I was so excited to see oak hardwood floors. Then realized that someone had been very sloppy with paint before putting down the carpet. There are paint drops everywhere and a solid smear up next to the wall. I really don't want to put in mega $$$ to rent a sander and then refinish the entire floor. I really just want to get the spots up without damaging the wood. Any suggestions?

I'd try Goof-Off first, if I couldn't scrape it off.

Also, steel wool would be easier on them than sandpaper.

The steel wool would be a good place to start. Assuming it is latex paint it should come off. If the steel wool dulls the finish, as long as it is along the wall, you could touch up with a satin polyurethane. I would try that first. Scraping could damage the finish. I'm not sure how goof-off affects varnish.

We had the same problem in our living room. I used a single edge razor blade carefully, many of the spots just about flipped off. The smears were more difficult but we were able to remove the paint. Wiped the floor with a damp cloth to remove any residue then a coating of floor wax and buffing made the floor glow.
