Picking green beans and yellow beans to can today; have 32 tomato plants that will produce within couple of weeks. Have cucumbers and squash setting on. We garden similar to the square foot gardening, but with large tractor tires stacked up and potting soil mixed up for better growing conditions. Easier to keep weeded and to pick vegetables. Usual grow enough for four families and can all we want.

I have never had any luck with corn, getting only tiny miniature ears, so have given up on that. My snap peas are done, have 7 pints in the freezer, doesn't sound like much compared to others on here. We ate all we wanted though. Am picking tomatoes and zucchini now. Just planted beans, and something ate my cukes as the seedlings came up. So I replanted today and put nylon netting over all of the newly planted things. Also wrapped my tomatoes in it, as there is a mockingbird that thinks he has first choice when they start to turn red. Hope that will keep him out of them, but who knows? Oh, also getting banana peppers now too.

we have a large variety of veggies, yes.. I love veggies of all kinds, and "can" as much as I can each summer - sometimes our winters here keep us snowbound in the mountains.. I am doing more pickled beets, dilly beans, dill pickles, though I have plenty of my homecanned sweet pickles left.. I do fruit, as well from our peach tree but not sure this year if the crop will be good - been too cold this spring, with tons of rain, ect.. Thank you for the kind comment.. we love our yard, and the view of the mountains!

Hi Karen, how do you keep the critters out? I have a friend in Bend and they fight deer and rabbits constantly. You do have a beautiful yard. Hope you have some help when you start that canning!

The deer, well, they are hard to corrall unless you put up a deer fence ( at least 8 feet tall, as they can't jump that ).. the raccoons, they dont come round much now that our neighbor has a dog.. As for canning all the produce, I do so much better doing it alone - my kitchen is large, yes, but I am one to like the soilitude so I can think, and not get forgetful when chatting..

I have a twin sister who lived in Bend, Oregon for over 20 years. She , and her hubby worked for the Bulletin until last year when they retired, and moved to Minnesota.. Love Bend, especially going to Goodies, and Drake park I think it was called.
