I have worn mono-vision for somewhere around 15 years. It seems every time I visit my eye dr there is a little bit of a 'tweak' to be done. I do notice that I have some difficulty when sewing and I plan to discuss that with her the next time I visit for a check-up. I will say...I do have vision insurance and we also put money, yearly, into a FLEX spending plan so getting an extra pair of glasses for some purpose is not generally cost-prohibitive for me. So, I will probably be ending up with a pair to wear when I am sewing or using my laptop.

I, too have had mono vision correct per my eye dr.'s advice. The others are correct . . . the brain sorts it out with no problem. My eye dr. also said the "cheater" or reading glasses are fine when needed but that with increasing age, the over the counter readers would eventually not do a good enough job. I faithfully go in for eye dr. ck. ups 2 x per yr. as I have a slightly high inner eye pressure that is important to monitor.

I wear Multi-focal contacts (Air Optix Multifocals), I was having a lot of time reading with just my spherical lenses. With the multi-focals I can see again, I would have never thought they would have worked so well.

Because of my extreme nearsightedness the bifocal contacts did not work well at all for me. I changed optometrists and have now had the monovision contacts for several years and like them very much. The only time I have problems is if I'm very tired or it's getting to be time to switch to a new pair at the end of the month or if my allergies are on the rampage.

I also had mono vision for years but mine was for reading and not distance. But you are right, it will never be perfect. I also have a prescription pair of reading glasses that I use as sometimes I just need to rest my eyes without any contacts as I now have to wear a distance contact as of 3 months ago.

I was having a hard time with wearing contacts. My doctor figured out that my eyes were getting very dry during some activities (using the computer, sewing, etc). Have you tried rewetting solution? My vision improved significatly after using the eye drops.
