DH bakes all of our bread. When I started my last real job about 20 years ago, one of the gals was talking up her wonderful bread machine. I had to have one. I baked bread in it proubly twice. My husband took up the challange. Over the years he has modified the recipe so that now he mixes 3 loaves and bakes in the oven. This makes a better shape loaf. We have gone through 3 or 5 machines. The first we bought new but the others we bought at Good Will. Our gs thought we bought them at Great Wheels store. He liked to go there with us. We always have home baked bread in the house. Once the newnest wears off you can resist overeating.

I think some people just have the "right touch". I've had 5 breadmakers - all different brands ending with the $150 Cuisinart my hubby bought and I still can't get a decent loaf. I've used recipes from the book, friends, relatives and online - none were good - at least to me. It is very hard to knead bread with arthritic hands, so I guess I'll just keep buying it from the store - even though it has no taste.
