I read in bed. With the thermostat down for the night, I don't want to get up and have to generate the additional body heat to warm up a spot on the couch.

I have chronic insomnia and I blame it on all the years I worked night shift (11PM to 7AM or 7PM to 7AM). Am a slug all day but when the sun goes down I come alive and am up til 3 or 4AM. Have tried benedryl, tylenol PM, melantonin and prescription drugs like ambien and trazodone. Nothing has worked. I cannot live like regular people...so, I gave up trying.
I get up when I get up and if I need a mid-day nap so be it.
That having been said, I get along very nicely now with 3 or 4 hrs of sleep at night and a 2-3 hr nap.

What has worked for me is getting a warm cup of milk mixed with 1 tbl. of honey. Within a few mintues I'm ready to go back to bed and to sleep.

when i can't sleep, i give myself an hour to get there. if that does not happen within an hour, i get up and do something productive. i can't stand wasting time doing nothing. usually i sew. when my kids were younger and lived at home, they would get up in the morning and i'd have a whole project done. they were always quite impressed!

Welcome to my world of chronic insominia. I used to get up and sew or read...but then my feet would swell. SO now I lay in bed awake grrrrrrrrrrrrr. I seem to sleep every other day.

The main thing I do is put Lavendar scented hand cream or body cream on. Lavender pus me to sleep rather quickly. Then I count animals, not sheep. I do not have any sheep, but have a horse, a steer, 13 parrots, 5 dogs, several cats mostly barn cats, chickens, and ducks. Oh forgot the 2 pot belly pigs and the 4 pygmy goats. So if I count by name (chickens and ducks do not have names) I usually fall asleep before I get to the end. But it probably is the lavender that does me in for the rest of the night. I keep the creams on the bedside table.
