We burn all paper garbage in the garage -- that is the heat source there. All kitchen garbage gets thrown "over the hill" and something comes to eat it. All cans and plastic are recycled. We only throw away a small bag of garbage each month. Course we live in the country so burning isn't an issue.

I have 2 bags ready to go to the wiennie roast this weekend. It's cold here but I was told as long as the fire is contained-with a screened lid we can burn it. shredder died last year so I just burn it. And it will be all burnt in a matter of 20 minutes so it takes so little time to protect the info. But . . . I have just been tossing the credit card offers. dummy me figured that if I didn't actually fill it out -well, no harm done. will burn those now too!

When we were moving, our SIL "helped" us. She helped herself to lots of our stuff. Some of the stuff she helped herself to (unbeknownst to her) was our passports and DD214's and other items of interest only to us that were in a beautiful wooden box. When we mentioned to her that we had lost our paperwork, she immediately stated that she would talk to our movers. Miraculously, the "movers" returned our stuff. To this day, we have not thought of her without thinking of how she took our stuff and could have done us lots of damage.

I used to be a mortgage loan officer years ago, only I only did the 'good' loans, what I myself would want. We invested in a cross cut paper shredder years ago and use it religiously. Once your information is 'out there' you can't ever get it back, and what happens to your credit & medical history is a nightmare that will continue for years, because once you fix it, round two starts. Nothing goes into the garbage bin that has any scrap of information about us, credit applications we receive are shredded, we are scrupulously careful about information that is given to others, and we locked our credit with all 3 bureaus years ago. In one of the towns we used to live in there was a prison -- guess who sorted through the garbage every week to weed out recyclables, etc? Yep, the inmates.
