It would be an even worse hardship for her to have to bury her kids, or be forced to go to jail because of someone else she has killed while talking on the phone and driving.

As a concerned mother, she should ALWAYS stop that darn car to talk on the phone. It is hard enough to concentrate on avoiding accidents without the attention grabbing phone calls and children arguing and driving on rainy or frozen slippery roads. There are way too many others out there doing just as she is. That is why lots of states are voting in that law, which is really needed. That is another reason the blood bank I volunteer with is constantly desperately searching for new donors, we are always short of blood and need more. Let's hope your daughter is never one of those who winds up needing a transfusion because she would not stop the car long enough to talk on her cell phone.

Here and in the UK, mobile phone use has been banned for some years now (hands free is still OK), also ALL passengers have to be belted in, so those kids wouldn't be allowed to 'jump all over the van'.

What has happened to good old common sense.
If you are away from home and anyone calls they can call back or leave a message.
Why does everyone have to have a phone when they are busy doing other things. As for using the phone whilst driving, well get a life before you take someone elses. There is no question in my mind. The only people who should have a phone in the car (hands free that is ) are the emergency services. Everyone else should (if they have to carry a phone everywhere they go) switch it off when driving, no question.
Why do people think they are so exempt from safety, not only to themselves but others around them.
In england it is supposed to be banned but I see them all the time. I was a passenger in my daughters car and we had to pull up and stop due to volume of traffic, my daughter said my Gosh there is a driver coming up behind me on the phone and he is not slowing down. YES you guessed it, he drove right into us. Luckily we were'nt hurt.
So switch off the phones before you get into the car.

I too have been rear ended by someone on her phone; and just yesterday some guy took the corner to wide while on the phone and just missed hitting me on the drivers side.

No texting went into effect yesterday. Lets see how that gets enforced.

I have no problem with it - my OH got fined $275 for using phone while driving. He has never done it again.

Seat belts are also mandatory in Australia, front and back, for over 30 years, although we have never been fined for that.

I saw a show where they had drivers on the phone do a driving test around cones,etc they did worse than a drunk driver would.one should not multi task while driving just way toooo dangerous

I have one of my cell phone lines connected to the OnStar of my car. It shares the minutes of my cell phone. I would still have to pay the $20/month for OnStar but I don't have to buy minutes through them, and I don't have that annoying thing on my ear. Is completely hands free.

I'm glad they passed this new law, irritates the tar outta me seeing someone driving all over the road only to see them yackin/playing with their phone. Been almost hit twice cause some fool was paying more attention to his phone rather than traffic, good thing "I" was paying attention.
I wait til I'm stopped or parked or if someone's with me I have them answer and tell the person I'll call 'm later cause I'm busy driving.

Anyway, yes it's illegal for anyone in Iowa to text while driving. You can still talk on cell phone but must use hands free device.
First 6 months they're only handing out warnings after that they'll hand out tickets. Believe they start handin out tickets Jan. 1st.
And we've got a new seat belt law, anyone under 18 is to be buckled in or in a car seat no matter where in the car they are.

I firmly agree that any cell phone use whether it is an actual call or texting should not be allowed while operating a vehicle. One of the first states to pass the ban I believe (I may be wrong on the state) was Mass because a police officer was struck and killed by someone on their phone.

I leave my house for a reason-I miss the days when people had no way to get in touch with me. If I did not commute an hour one way to work I would not even own a personal cell phone. I think it is irresponsible of anyone to be on the phone while driving.

Emergency responders have radios for emergency use-why do they need cell phones? To me there is nothing more dangerous than a police officer who is already speeding and on the phone. If the law is good for the goose it needs to be good for the gander as well...just my two cents. I am not sure how the people who are expected to follow the law can be ticketed when those who are supposed to be enforcing it are "above it".

(just a side note I was a volunteer FF, have close friends who are responders and FFs and I myself was involved in a very bad car accident when I was 16 so I know how important emergency personnel are I just don't think cellphones are)

Personally feel that using a cell phone while driving is the same as drinking coffee while driving and eating a sandwich while driving.

It depends on your skill level. Beyond Drivers ed, hardly anyone uses the 10 and 2 position anyway.
