I'm late reading this - but it sure caught my eye!
Yes, I have 4 vintage csm's. An Auto Knitter, Legare 400, and 2 Gearharts (1908 & 19??). Yes, they have a learning curve, but once you get a heel/toe mastered they can be lots of fun. I've made lots of nice socks and fingerless mittens. There are lots of crank-in's to go to and learn/share with others who have these machines (not the ones sold at Michaels, JoAnn's, etc). Everyone who has one is very helpful. There is a Yahoo group and also Ravery groups you can join and share info.

Sue Vunesky at cabincreekstudio.com gives lessons, located at Warrenton. Erlbacher Gearhart in Cape Girardeau, MO makes and sells new machines. they have a website and I know lots of people have bought from them since they started in 2011. they other manufacture is in New Zealand. I bought my 1st vintage restored from her, but she makes new ones, NZAK. There are 'crank-ins' at various times/places thru the year. I am going to one in Butler, MO on Jan 25, 2014. If you want more info about it or want to attend to see what we are doing, let me know & I can give you further details after the holidays. They are fun and frustrating at the same time!!! I have socks to make for Christmas so better get busy this week.
