i vaccuum my computer regularly- it is amazing how much better it is when it's been vaccuumed out- and do regular (tech maintenance) there should be a regular maintenance schedule set up to (clean) your computer on a regular basis- including doing a scan and a defrag.
regular maintenance will keep your computer running smoothly for a long time- neglect will shorten their lives immensly

Do you have a PC or a Mac?
I have a PC and, as said above, I regularly 'clean' it. I do disk cleanup first - no point in organizing old fragments of junk. The example I was given was to understand fragmented files was separate pages of a report stored in different drawers of of different file cabinets in different offices with no rhyme or reason.
1) Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup
2) Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
Physical cleaning I leave to a others.
