Yes, I remember when my Mom would wash my little brother's blanket that he used to suck his thumb. You would see him out at the clothes line standing under it and sucking his thumb and the othe hand on the blankie. This was in the afternoon when he got tired and must not have been able to stand it anymore.

I use my clothesline more for airing blankets & pillows than for drying clothes. Seems my DH doesn't like the smell of "sunshine". :-) I spent lots of time hanging diapers as a young Mom, didn't you?

Clothes hung on the line always smelled to good. I am from that era. When I lived in UK, would hang the clothes out and sometimes when I brought them in, there would be black spots on them from coal dust--never came off. And sometimes stiff as a board--ah those were the days. If I had a line I would hang everything out!!

We were poor growing up (not that far away from it now either! lol!) and my mother said that all we could afford was this old wringer washer - and no dryer. So that's what I learned to wash clothes with while all my friends had modern washers and dryers. Every Thursday I'd do the family's laundry (and get soaked rinsing the clothes in the utility sink)- and hang it on the line - either outside or in the basement if it was winter. What a chore! I never learned that about the socks and pants though - my mom always hung socks by the tops and pants by the waistbands...

I LOVE the smell of bed sheets hung outside! I love towels hung out too, only I can only make myself do it if it's a good windy day so they get naturally "softened" as they whip in the wind!

Oh yes, been there, done that!! We also carried water in buckets, heated it in a washtub over an outdoor fire~~~ and on and on~~~ I am so thankful for our modern conveniences. But!!! I remember hanging diapers for my two boys and they sparkled in the sunshine to make me proud..... I used to make my own clothes and shirts for the men/boys, everything starched, ironed...... ah, the good old days!!

I remember doing all of that and you had to have one that was an "L" shape because you never knew which direction the wind would blow.
