He'll start putting on some weight now that he's wormed. Glad he will be able to get his medication soon. He has such a sweet face. Who could resist him?

Whenever you put his food bowl down, just stand quietly beside the bowl while he eats -- don't talk to him or try to touch him, and don't pick up the bowl when he is finished, just both of you leave the room together. After a week or 2 of this he should be confident that you are not going to take away his food. The next step is to drop really good food like BBQ chicken into his bowl when he finishes -- now he realises that someone near his food bowl means extra wonderful food. But drop the food in from waist high -- don't bend down. After a week or two of this, stand near his bowl while he eats, then walk away, pick up some great food and walk back to the bowl and again drop it into the bowl -- now he realises that if someone approaches his food bowl, he is going to get even better food and you should start to see him actually greeting you as you walk up to the bowl. The key is to progress slowly, never threaten his food bowl by taking it away, and build up his confidence in you that you will only ever give him more and better food. It won't hurt either to make him work for some of his food by sitting, dropping etc and walking beside you without a lead (in the house or yard) and this way he will become accustomed to being hand fed (just one piece of Kibble at a time) many times a day. If he has lived rough for a while he has probably been worried about where his next meal is coming from, and he needs to develop confidence in you.
cheers
Sandra
Thanks for your tips! We feed all 3 of our dogs seperated from each other as our BG can be food aggressive as well. Cooper is actually doing better! You can stand or walk by him when he eats and he is no longer trying to push the other dogs away from their bowls. We put a Kong in his dish to make him slow down when eating. I think he is realizing that he is going to have a steady supply of food now! He also doesn't try to take your hand off when you hand him a treat, he will take it really gentle now.

Cooper is fitting right in! He is soooo sweet, very loving! We don't put him in the crate at nite, only did that the first night. He gets along well with BG (Ajaxx is so into herself that she doesn't interact with the others anyway!) He will cry at first when the lights are turned out at night and we go to bed. He hasn't pottied in the house, and is always eager to go outside; adapted to the doggie door with no problem!! He has an excellent attitude and is definately a plus for our family. BG has been very sad since Zeuss is gone and was having some behavioral problems but those are starting to fade since the arrival of Cooper.

I had missed your first post about getting Cooper. What soulful eyes he has. Considering he walked so well on a leash, he was, once upon a time loved by someone who took the time to train him. I am so glad you found him and saved him.

I too am struggling with the loss of my dog. We had to send her on to the rainbow bridge on September 7. She was also a GSD mix, 12 years old had her since she was a 8 week old puppy and I miss her so. I am in the process of getting a new pup to help heal the massive hole in my heart right now. I have also been haunting the shelters too.
