Copyright Question
At a AAA baseball stadium, t-shirts are thrown to rowdy fans. I took a t-shirt, and used it as the fabric for a purse pattern I had, so I made a purse from a t-shirt, and gave it to a friend. Another fan saw the purse and wants me to make her one. She said she would pay for it. If I make a purse and sell it with the logo of the baseball team, have I violated copyright laws? My question stems from my understanding that I cannot take logo fabric, make a project, and sell it, but I can give away the logo-fabric project.

What you can not do is ( copy) the logo yourself , make something to sell. Like create an appliqué of their logo....you can do as you please with the logo items you have purchased- they received their $ from the sale of the item. If you created the logo on your own you would owe them their ( royalties) on the use of their logo.

Don't copy the logo, use the original that is purchased or given away.
There are copyright laws and then there are copyright rules. By the way it's not illegal to break a rule. Many designers add a rule or two next to the copyright law and make it read like it is the law.

There is a podcast called, I just want to Quilt that is put on by a Quilter who is a copyright law professor at Tulane University. There is also a Face Book page for what she calls the quilting army, when you join her face book page.
The podcast is very interesting as she is conducting a study about quilting as a hobby and copyright issues as well.
You will find her podcast if you google quilting podcasts. Any quilter can contact her with copyright questions.

I agree that making the purse and selling it would not be a copyright violation. However, many sports teams are notorious for protecting their logos. If this team decides to take you to court, you might win, but the process could be very expensive and upsetting. Just something to consider.
