So far I've never had a problem with Craigslist but if I am selling something I make the person put something totally weird in the subject line when they email me back, ask for their home, work number and full name with the explanation that I'm keeping us both safe. If they are legit they have no problem with my request. The police station here suggests you meet people in their lobby. If I meet someone in a public place I do the parking lot of Bojangles. It's a small area where there are many people so it safer. I would never meet someone at a Walmart or Target parking lot. I never go alone and have actually taken one of the kids I worked with. He's about 6'4" and looks intimidating but is an absolute pussycat.

After buying something on eBay, I always go to PayPal now and make sure to close out that window. Ever since eBay purchased PayPal they leave the PayPal window open even after you leave eBay. Leaving the PayPal window open makes it easier for hackers to get through.

I also put a machine on CL once and got something similar to this. I knew it was a scam and told them so and told them not to contact me again. My Viking #1, is still sitting in the box. I had just gotten it back from being serviced when this happened and haven't wanted to deal with it again.

My cousin was selling a piece of furniture on a website. People came to the house with cash. She got out her "pen". She told them their money was no good, the bank evidently gave them bad money. They left and she never saw them again but had gotten photos of their tag. Couple days later they were arrested. Funny money, stolen vehicle, bad tags. She turned the information she had over to the authorities which only strengthened their case. We usually donate to the curb.

I had the same thing happened !! But after persistently changing how/where to send $$, I got the feeling it was a scam since it was all about the money and not the item I was selling. Took to post office upon receiving the money order and sure enough it was a scam. They handled it instead.

Thanks for posting. I am listing a car on CL this weekend and will make sure I ask for cash only (we are asking $500 or best reasonable offer - so there shouldn't be too much of a problem with cash). My DH will be around for the weekend, so if we get any offers, he will be there with me.
Great idea taking pic of their license plate. I always take pic of MY plates and keep on my cell phone just in case my car is stolen I can report the plate # to the police.
