When my oldest daughter had her first baby, she phoned me from Texas, wanting to know what the heck Belly Bands were. Her overbearing MIL had given her some with orders to use them. So
I told her to wash them to "get the new out of them" , put them away, and when her MIL was on the way to visit (she did always phone first) to wrap it around the baby's waistline over the belly button and pin it there. Then when MIL was gone, take it off and wash all of them again so they'd look used...worked nicely for her.

DD said her oldest niece had a cosmetic procedure to make her an innie. She couldn't wear a two piece bathing suit without feeling horribly deformed as she called it. Teen girls have so much pressure on how they look from their peers these days it really affects their self esteem for life.

I imagine belly bands were used because there was no safe tape back then. ? But all moms had a strip of cloth. I found the belly band I had. It has the name of the hospital stamped on it. I forgot it came with the baby. Like the border striped receiving blankets every mom gets now. LOL
