I am 54 and I have short hair. Actually my first real short haircut was just before my son was born (25 years ago), so I would have one less thing to deal with after a new baby. My hair is very thick and heavy when it's long which makes me too hot when I exercise, so I keep it short.

Being short also makes it easier to wash and go. When it was long, it would take several hours, as long as 8 (when I had it waistlength), to dry. My DH prefers it long, but is very understanding about why I like it short.

Even now, every time I get a haircut (about every 5-6 weeks), enough gets trimmed off that when its swept up, it looks like a small animal was left behind.

However, I agree with the others on the main answer: what are you comfortable with? It is all a personal choice.

My parents never let me have long hair until high school, by my senior year it was down past my waist( I had regular trims too) now I don't want anything but long hair-it is half way down my back and I just got six inches cut off. Also my hair is so straight and it won't hold a curl unless its permed and that just isn't popular right now, older women are wearing straight long hair and some with sexy big curls. I am 56 and still have my own color in my hair.

In my case, short hair looks better....
my hair is very fine and when it gets a bit long it hangs with no body!

I also think short hair is hotter it lays heavy on the back of your head, the long hair is cooler swept up in a ponytail or pretty hair accessory.

My hair's been falling out from stress and menopause(at age 37) an I've worn it in a pixie style for the longest time. I'm only 49, but I think my hair cut short looks better than it being shoulder length and stringy looking. I've always had thin hair (my dad did too) but life got in the way and it started falling out. Now that it's short, I wash it, toss it about and it's done. Easy to keep that way.

I'm 55 and my hair is just above my waist and I will never wear my hair short My hair is sort of thick and its got some wavy-ness to it and the best part is I don't have to spend hours fussing with it

I love love long hair but my hair is very fine plus I was in the hospital 18 times in 12 months so I had my hair cut and spiked so I could look good with little maintenance I would love to grow it back out but that meens curling it everyday

I agree with you! When I had short hair, and got hot, it would get wet and plastered right to my face. Now, with it long and twisted in back, I may be sweating but at least my hair isn't dripping, too. And at my age, I seem to really drip when I sweat now!
