Do you have family or friends that are or were in the military?

My late husband was in Viet Nam for a year. He never liked to talk about it, but from what little he did say, I gathered it troubled him a great deal! I'm glad the attitude toward those who serve in the Armed Forces has changed so much. And, hopefully, that families are remembered as well!

My family have been either military or police since this country became our country. One of my cousins has gone through our shared Grandma and joined the DAR.
My father was a Sailor in 1917 (apparently he used an older brother's BD because that would make him 15 then, but we have pictures of him on ship and in uniform then) and my uncles were mostly AF then. One of my favorites was shot down over France, he had deep respect for the French Freedom Fighters, and he loved the Red Tailed Black Angels who flew the guard planes. First time he flew without them he was shot down.
Lots of older cousins were military, I remember seeing them all (or at least a lot of them) at a family reunion dressed in their uniforms.
Both my brothers retired from the military, one Army and one Air Force. I almost joined the WACs but before final signing a boyfriend talked me into marriage instead...a real stupid thing, but got me two marvelous daughters.
My grandson and granddaughter (brother and sister) both joined the Army on the same day. Son-in-law just retired from Army 2 years ago. My oldest son was Army and in Germany as security during that 70s massacre. Other son was Navy, then National Guard and went all over the world with the medics to poor countries, and to Katrina with medical troops. Lots of nieces and nephews are more police than military now.
Ex hubby was Air Force, late DH was Army.

Father in Naval Armed Guard stationed on a merchant marine ship carrying ammo during WWII
Many uncles in WWII at the same time. One was a POW and survived. All returned from the war.
2 Aunts served during WWII. One typed up the surrender papers for Japan.
Brother a Marine at the start of Viet Nam, was also involved in DR uprising
Son is a career Coast Guard now serving north of Detroit.
Also had family members serving during the Civil War.

My DH is retired Navy. Retired after 21 years with a service related disabilty (knees cut to pieces in diving accident). He will likely have another surgery this year.
Two nephews in Navy. Both current deployed. My SIL just finished 6 years with Army and has enlisted in National Guard Reserve.
One Uncle career Navy, three others Army.
Grandfather enlisted in National Guards WWII, served a short time before the end of the war. Two of his brothers also served
My family has service going back in all major wars to the Revolutionary War. (Hubby's Revolutionary War ancestor is being honored next week, he is the only known Revolutionary soldier buried in Giles County, TN).
Many many friends, the best man at our wedding was retired Army. We spent yesterday with friends among which was five who had served in some way.
