I have one hummingbird feeder up. And have seen several hummingbirds. My feeder is like the one barnbum posted. I think the hummingbirds like the little ledge around it to sit on. Not that they sit there for long...lol
They are so much fun to watch!

We have had a feeder also and never(kock wood) had a bee problem. We use packaged food and follow directions. Try again, maybe you have a bee's nest close to your home.

Hummingbirds are one of the best signs that spring will truly arrive. We have plastic feeders. I always look for feeders with perches since I like to watch the birds sit and look around from it. My DH thinks the mix should be more like 1-1 so the bird formula changes depending on who fills the feeders.

One year we had big black hornets take ownership of one feeder. They didn't climb inside it, but the birds and the bees had quite the battles over who would drink from which side. I felt sorry for the birds, but they would scope out the scene, then swoop in on the undefended side and sneak a drink before the bee could get over there, then swoop away. The hummingbirds fight each other over who will drink from where, so they have a lot of effective tactics.

We have had a variety of feeders for 30 years, always with perches. To keep ants, bees, etc. off the feeders - after I fill them with the boiled 1 cup sugar to 4 c. water - I dip my finger in some mineral oil & rub it on the surfaces around the feeding holes & on the hanger wires & lid. The bugs don't like getting their feet in it. I know I have some of the same birds return because the early arrivals will come to the hook outside my kitchen window, look for the feeder & then fly right up to the middle of the window looking in as if to say, "I'm here, where's the feeder?" We have 3 feeders, each with 6 holes. I have seen as many as 3 sit on 1 at the same time, but as soon as a 4th arrives all h... breaks lose. Some will guard a feeder & chase off the others. They may be little but they're feisty.

Good job with these pictures. They are great! I have several feeders and one is right in front on my sun room window which is my sewing room. I love watching them all day. They are especially busy mornings and late evenings. They fight over the feeders. I have 5 out and it is important to keep them clean.

We also make nectar with 4 C water to 1 C white sugar -- boil until sugar is dissolved and let cool. We use it in an older glass one-quart jar with the red flowers on the dispenser. The birds love it and we love watching them. We also have gold finches in the early spring that love to eat thistle seed.
