    I opt for pen/pencil set or business/calling cards.

    In Victorian days when folks went-a-calling, if no one was home, they left their card.

    Tail end charlie on this one. If it is for holding pens (which seems likely), cast iron is not commonly used, they were often silver, bronze or spelter. You may have a bronze item there, more valuable than cast iron or spelter.

    I agree with Lisa. This is probably what is referred to as a "Fire Dog". Yours was probably used to hold paper or kindling for the fireplace. My ex's grandmother used to own a similar pair.

    I have no idea what this dog was used for but it's driving me NUTS! :D

    I've been searching ebay and google images hoping to find an answer. My parents are antiquers and were forever dragging me to estate sale and auctions as a child. Now the thrill of undiscovered items leads me to the same places.
