Yes, but if you stop eating them long enough, the craving will go away.

Do you think that our bodies get used to certain things and they just don't like not having them anymore?
It takes more than a week to rid yourself of the cravings for these things. Every now and then I put myself onto the South Beach diet where for 2 weeks I cannot eat: potato, all grain products (bread, pasta, rice, etc), fruit, liquor (I'm not a drinker), and sugar. There are a few veggies that you can't eat either - corn, carrots, beets - those that are high in sugar (or starch which is sugar).

The first three days I feel great - not a problem. By day 4-5 if someone walked past me with McDonalds French Fries I'd mug them and take their fries. Once I get past day 6-8 I'm "home free" - my body has rid itself of the complex sugars and no longer craves them and I find that I have tons more energy than I ever had. I hate South Beach diet because it denies me my favorite foods (potato, bread, pasta), and I LOVE South Beach diet because it denies me the foods that are the worst for me and my specific weight issue (potato, bread, pasta <G>).

Read up on SB and it explains how the body treats sugars - especially complex sugars - and you'll understand why you crave chocolate and potato chips so much. It's not an "easy" diet if you crave these foods like I do, but if these foods are the contributing factor in a weight problem it's a fantastic diet once you make it past day 8-10 or so it becomes easier.

I grew up in an Italian home so carbs and pastas were the centerpieces of all of our meals. Trying to give those up are near impossible, especially when I get emotional about something. I go back to what gave me pleasure and comfort while I was growing up. So my addiction to certain foods is more emotioinal than anything. And what is funny is, I never really was addicted to those foods then.....now that I am older, they seem to bring me so much more comfort. So I think we eat what brings us comfort, especially in stressful times. I know I need to give up a lot of carbs if I ever want to lose weight, but.................

I gave up Coke as too expensive. I gave up potatoes, bread and pastas. Felt sssooo much better, NO PAIN. Did this to lose weight. Been walking and have gained....4 inches on each calf and thigh. Lost 2 inches on arms.

I have read that it is both a physical and emotional addiction. Your brain chemistry actually changes and you physically crave the "drug of choice". And emotionally..well we all know when we have to rip seams, it does go better after chocolate! LOL

My addiction is coffee. If I don't drink enough I have terrible headaches.

I think you are right! I have to have something sweet every day or I get cranky!

Read somewhere where sugar is more addictive than most drugs. Ask people who really had to give it up.

I can't eat chocolate or drink coffee because they give me migraines; has to do with the way the coffee beans and chocolate are processed. So I found a substitute when I crave something sweet.
    ------------------------------
Try Carob, it is chocolate tasting, and can be cooked with too. I make "chocolate" milk shakes that taste like the real thing. And I put some Carob chips in it like chocolate chips. Milk, a banana, ice cubes, Carob and a touch of vanilla, Stevia or real sugar or honey, and any other thing I happen to like. Thick and creamy!!
