I was thinking about siging up for this, as a back up for my cell phone. My cell is my only phone, as we got such a good price on unlimited minutes. However, at times I have forgot to charge it   or the towers have gone down for a while due to bad weather or maintenance. So I thought for $40 I get the "jack" and that includes a years worth of service, $20 a year there after... sounds like a good deal for a back up.

I read some bad reviews, and some good ones online, but I do not know anyone who uses it.
I heard you can get dropped calls, but I get those on my cell once in a while too. I usually leave my computer on most of the time I am home, so that is not a problem.

What do you like or dislike about it?

The only thing I don't like about it is....no phone if power or computer goes out.
I have a landline and my cell phone. Those people who have my cell number are lucky. I don't hand it out to just anyone. Plus, it's really expensive here to have a cell phone.
Power is always going out on us and when it does, I still have my landline. Hasn't failed me yet!

My sister had it and had nothing but problems. When my phone bill came I found out that every time I called her I was charged long distance fees even though it was a local call. hubby was not happy with me. She could call out but no one could call her without being charged.
Some days it worked some days it didnt. She finally got rid of it.

I know alot of people who have Vonage and love it.
Especially those that are overseas....they get a number from their parents or friends and just "carry" it overseas with them. No clue how it works, but it does.

    Yes, they say free:
long distance to USA and Canada
    directory assisstance
    and a few other services

I don't have a landline when the power went out anyway...I have a portable phone....

I would hate for someone to get charged long distance for calling me...I was thinking about picking an area code so Mom could call me on a local number...

There was a law enforcement investigation a few months back on the Magic Jack. Apparently it is being used by drug dealers and scam artists who use your number to make certain deals. And the phone numbers are all over the US and so it's hard to track. I can't remember all the details, but I would definitely not use this company. It's one of those things that if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is too good to be true. Just my two cents worth.

I tried Magic Jack and had nothing but problems....we were not happy at all. We did use Vonage for years and it was great. We had no problems to speak of other then lousy customer service when you did have to call them. We now have a landline with just basic local calling and cellphones for long distance. I would not recommend MagicJack at all.

We use it. Have had it for two years. No longer have a landline. Down side for us, need to leave computer on all the time. We have a Yuma #. When we go home ( snowbirds) we use a pay as you go cell. I give my cell number to my friends. If they phone me on my cell I just say let me call you back ( to avoid using my minutes) on my magic jack. We like it no long distance charges ever. Just paid $59 for 5 years of service.
