I live smack dab in the middle of hurricane land... there is NO way I'd have anything but a gas stove. When my girls were babies, I remember many times standing outside in the rain, heating their food and bottles over a gas grill, because my stove was electric, and the electricity was out. When Ike went through Houston a couple of years ago and we were without electricity for several days, I was the only one in the neighborhood who could cook indoors. :) It's funny, but now both of my daughters are complaining about their electric stoves.

i did it years ago, but the problem with canning is that you do it when it's hot.
now i make it into something and freeze it. whatever it is.

Good for you! My hat's off to you...my mom canned one summer and fall over 1,000 quarts and pints of veggies and that's how we ate that winter...money was tight!
