i put a cheap plastic coated table cloth on mine..

they also make a motion alarm pad for pets to keep them off things..
i used one in my bay window.worked like a charm..

This would be my suggestion as well.

It sounds like your son does not want to train the dog off the bed - I don't blame him, I wouldn't either. It's a personal preference and he isn't doing anything wrong by letting him stay there.

Making up the bed for daytime should just include blankets that are designated for the dog, rather than going for the pretty. It's not like he's there to see it while this is going on anyway. :wink:

How big is the bed? I am thinking, a sheet of plywood, keep under bed at night, lay on bed during day. Thought of this as I have a sheet between my mattress and box spring.

Why can't he crate train the dog for when he goes out? My lab loves hers and goes in it by herself when she hears the car keys jingle. She can't destroy anything or injure herself.
