Upper class- those who have enough to enjoy things that are out of the price range of others(their choice of items is not a based on need but want and status) This however has exceptions as I have know many in that class who started in poverty and nver forgot their roots
Middle class- always wanting more then they have and ignoring those who have less- Some don't forget but it sems because their financial security is not as stable as the upper class you find more of a withdrawal from recognizing the needs of those who have little

There might be several divisions to each of the "classes" now.

    Independently wealthy class: Gates, Jobs
    Upper class - multi-millionaires
    New upper class...lottery winners

    Upper middle class -
    Middle class
Lower middle class - where a lot of middle class people now find themselves thanks to portofolios taking hits in the market.

    Low class

    Poverty level

I'm sure all the classes could be broken down even more, "things are a changing with each passing day".

In other words - I really don't know anymore.

When I think of class it isn't the money or social status.
It is manners, and kindness, and honesty, and compassion and a divine grace under pressure. It is courage and loving the unlovable, forgiveness and decency.

Upper class: higher than you are and where most people wish they were.

Middle class: having the ability to meet all of your needs yourself----housing, food, medical insurance, etc.

That is also a "class", it's the truely classy class, and you can have no money to all the money in the world and be this kind of classy - too few people fall into this class these days. It's truely something for which we can strive. sharet

That is a great way to describe it.

I graduated with a degree in Sociology. I know what the book says, most people are surprised. I will pay attention to what others say they are.

Lower Class - People who dream of vacations.

Middle Class - The folks who used to be able to take vacations.

Upper Class - The folks who still take vacations, and make everyone hate Americans. (baaaaad Kelly!)

Middle class is us who pay all the taxes. Upper class are those that figure out how to pay none.
Not sociologically correct I know but that's life in America.

PS: I have a Master's in Sociology and have never figured out what good it does me. That and a buck or so will buy a cup of coffee.
