My DH loves doing consumer research and bought Monster surge protectors for our use. The ones he put on our big screen TV last spring cost $189. I couldn't believe it BUT he stays out of my chili so I do the same. (There are cheaper Monster brand protectors. . . I know how to do research too! LOL) I have a surge protector on my serger and sewing machine but both of them are purely mechanical so they remain plugged in always.

I lost my Janome due to a lightning strike, and we lost our computer due to one, so I have surge protectors on both of them now. I turn them off when a severe storm is coming, and when I'm going to be gone for a long time. I was glad to have everything unplugged last week when the tornado came through this area. It didn't hit here, but did a number on our town, two tornados hit it with hail, wind, and a lot of damage. The first time in my life I ever went to the basement. Luckily, I didn't need to, but I wasn't going to take a chance.

We had massive electrical problems back in Feb and had to replace our entire circuit box and outside lines going up to the triplex that hooks us into electric company. We were darn lucky the whole house did not burn down. Anyway the electrician installed a protector that junctions right into the circuit breaker box so the whole house is protected. If it is storming and I am home I will go unplug the longarm but don't usually think to unplug my Bernina.

I have surge protectors throughout my house. My son had one for all his electonic stuff. I have one on my computer and TV. I also have one that my serger and sewing machine are plugged into. When they are not in use I turn the surge protector off but it stays plugged in.
