I wonder if this would work?......

Put it on the corner of the sofa where Miss kitty scratches at. It's from Petsmart for 20 dollars.

My fiance and I were looking at one of these at Meijer today, and I was wondering how well they hold up. Just can't believe that cardboard is worth $20! He was thinking about getting one, but then he commented that it wouldn't matter anyway because they prefer furniture to any scratching post that has ever been designed. He just might be onto something there!!

That is the same one mine has. I haven't tried the other one.

I have three cats and they all use scratching posts. I have a total of 7. Two are climbing towers. The carpet has been replaced by us because they shredded what was on there. Good job cats. Three more are free standing carpet covered ones. They are just about history also. There is one rope one that they don't enjoy as well. The oldest two are 9 and I haven't had an issue with the furniture and them. The youngest seems to follow their lead and also has left the furniture alone.

We've had one scratching "sortof" post for 13 years. My husband took a piece of 4x4 left from putting up the backyard fence, stapled a scrap of the ugliest carpet scavenged from some building site (it was what used to be called indoor-outdoor carpeting) to it, and it just lays on its side. I guess it really is a scratching "thing". Our cats have never wanted to claw at anything else. They figured out what it was used for when they saw me scratching on it as kittens (our first cat thought I was his mommy, I dropper fed him). The others just followed along. I love free.

Maybe the question to ask is why do cats prefer furniture? Before I knew about scratching posts (I was new to cats, at the time), my kittens wrecked my sofa that had a brocade type of fabric. When I replaced it with a smoother fabric, and got a climbing post, they left the sofa alone.

I really do believe most cats like a rougher surface to trim their nails and, one where they can stretch. The one that someone posted that attaches to a corner of a wall probably works quite well. It looks rough and it can be positioned at the right height. Does anyone have one of these?

My cat has a log she works over pretty regular. Back when I was a really poor person I got it from a friend for a foot stool. When we got Belle as a kitten she immediately adopted it for her scratching post. It's cottonwood so it's a fairly soft wood and perfect for her to sharpen her claws. I'm thinking about getting the emory cats thing for her though.
