European River Cruise

European River Cruise
A quilting girlfriend and I have just put a down payment on a European River Cruise! Have any of you taken a cruise like that?
DH and I have taken ocean cruises, but never a river one. (His nose is slightly out of joint, but it is much cheaper for only one of us to go - and I am happy to be the one!).
Any advice?
Thanks. (and yes, DH is a keeper)

We took a Viking River cruise two years ago and are going on another one next August. We loved it. They are nothing like cruises on those big ships but we didn't want that experience. We have nothing negative to contribute as far as our experience.

My daughter and son-in-law did a cruise down the Rhine River in July. The cruise boat itself and the food were wonderful she said. It was a smaller cruise line, not one of the bigger cruise lines. Since it was a smaller cruise line, she thought they had to depart the boat in not-as-nice areas as the bigger boats. And they ended up leaving the boat alltogether in France, along with a few other couples, because there was a government shutdown and they couldn't go on the bus tours that were planned.

2 yrs ago took a Viking cruise down the Rhine. It was wonderful but very busy. I was tired when I returned. You have an excursion every day and nothing is close to the Rhine so bus to everything. The food was great and the crew were great. I would do it again but very pricey.

We are going in August on a Viking Cruise too - maybe we are taking the same trip?
