I don't think you can measure a dog's intelligence soley on how long it takes to housebreak him. Our two year old pug took less than a week to train and and as much as we love him, he's no rocket scientist. The puppy took longer and the vet said that's totally normal.
We have pugs and adore their disposition. They are not annoyingly yappy like other small dogs and the males in our family aren't embarrassed to be seen with them in public.
We used to have a German shorthair pointer. She passed away from old age. She was a doll.
I guess I care more about disposition than breed.

We love our bearded collie, and Bernie, our second, is the gentlest, most easy going dog we have ever owned. Our daughter's dogs have always been Newfoundlands and we have had them as frequent guests with our own dogs. So we kinda favour these big hairy ones I guess. Once we had a cockapoo, also hairy.

What a great post and responses!!! Have loved all my dogs to the extreme - all have been rescued from one place or another.
Doberman (Delilah) passed away at 11yo.
Terrier (Charlie) passed away at 3yo.
Poodle (Dusty) passed away at 12yo.
Poodle (Annie) passed away at 16yo.
Currently have Patty, a 3yo Min Pin who is very smart and a clown! My Chihuahua Mandy (my Avitar) is 13 yo and not is great health but spends all her time sitting on my lap whenever I let her (and I let her all the time!)

I am partial to spaniels.. I've had a brittney, and cocker..My guy is part cocker, and poodle.. A cockapoo.. He doesn't shed, as the other two.. The other two had very mellow personalities, he doesn't.. He was the runt of the littler, and has a Napolian complex.. He's 17 lbs, and thinks he's a big guy.. I think because he was the runt, he has the attitude..

We are a patchwork dog family. Every one of them is a favorite. Maggie/black lab 7 yrs, Sophie/yellow lab 3 yrs, Junebug( aka bug/buggy)boxer, approximately 3 yrs. old, she was a rescue out of a drug house, Tucker/ Saint Bernard 2.5 years, and finally Sam my birthday present, Rott pup (he and I are currently going to school (aka obedience classes). We have our vocabulary list on the fridge and study nightly!
My fondest memory is of Meriah (Ria), who passed away 3 years ago at the age of 15.5. She was a border collie cross that was the most awesome barn girl. She was the best when dealing with the cows, goats and kids. She'd herd like no other and always asked for a kiss by touching your chin and when you'd say thank you, she would give the softest butterfly lick ever. Miss her everyday...

Then I got Abbie and I have a feeling that I'm gonna be a Boston girl from now on.....I love pretty much all dogs though, well all pets in general! If I was going to get another dog though I think I might like to have a pug or a French bulldog!
