I buy fat quarters or no more than 1/2 yard of the flannel and wash and dry it (I buy the flannel anywhere I find it -- LQS, Joanns, etc). Once I wash it I feel it and only use the softest. Flannel shrinks when washed -- and no 2 pieces even from the same manufacturer shrink the same. I have also had flannel become threadbare -- both LQS and others. After washing, I pick the softest pieces for the burp cloths because (I have been told) they make great snot rags as the little ones get older. The rejects go into scrappy backs.

I have never used baby terry cloth -- sorry.
I've never seen terry cloth I'd want to use for anything, it's always cheap and barely "terried"

tinytea, what brand/type of quilt batting do you put between the layers?

Prism 99: I use Warm and Natural in mine. I also stitch across the burp cloths 3 times equal distance from each other.

I bought bar cloths at a department store to make burp cloths. They are double sided terry cloth. I added a piece of fabric down one side. Much cheaper than diapers. I got five for $9.00.

I have made a lot of burp cloths and usually use the flannel that JoAnn's puts on sale to keep the cost down. It has juvenile prints. I can get four cloths out of a half yard. I make mine in an hourglass shape with rounded corners. I use the flannel for the front and back and a cotton quilt bat in the center. I sandwich the flannel and bat together before I cut the burp cloth out and sew it wrong sides together like a rag quilt. I use muslin for the pattern so there is no pinning necessary as it sticks to the flannel. After sewing I trim the bat close to the stitching and clip the seam allowance and when washed the edges fray. I also stitch once across the center to hold the layers together. These burp cloths get washed a lot and are still going strong after multiple babies have used them. I use the same technique to make larger changing pads. These have rounded corners but are not hourglass shape.

I make mine out of 100% cotton with 100% cotton batting on the inside. Have had no complaints and I have made dozens of them.

Wonderful suggestions! I have to get busy with all my baby stuff as new great-grandson is due the middle of October!! I already have some nice diapers to use but you can never have too many burp cloths!!

Wonder what fabric could be used to make small washcloths? The ones I've found in the stores seem expensive to me.
