We wear them here in Australia all summer long.
I generally buy a size bigger than usual for the exact reason you've mentioned.

The better quality the flip flops (or as well call them, thongs) the softer the rubber and less likelihood to create calluses.

Oh gosh.. I'm one who always wears flip-flops.. I started wearing them when I was very young and so my feet grew around the thing between my toes.. I have very skinny feet (oh, if my body would only follow suit!!) and they are the only thing I can buy with ease.. and even some of the flip-flops are falling off my bony foot! Either you love them or hate them.. I love them and hope they never fall out of style..

Yes, they used to be thongs, but no longer.. Now everyone would laugh if I said I was going shopping for some new thongs!! Does anyone remember the split toe sock/bootie that you could buy with the zipper up the ankle? Those little booties made them year around footwear for this California girl. Wish I could still get those.

Don't despair, there is a pattern that lets you turn plain flip flops into quilted flip flops and you can eliminate the thing between you toes aand the part that is giving you calouses. I just remade a pair. Here is a link to the bow and go pattern

Haven't worn flip flops since the 70's in middle school...but they were sort of dressier ones. Does anyone remember 'Zorries'? They had velvet straps and woven grass or something where your foot rested.

Last year I got terrible blisters and calluses at exactly that spot. I'd never noticed that before, but I think I was wearing those sandals too much. Spending this summer in sneakers!

I have found that, as others have said, they vary widely. I have had a couple pair that hurt like the dickens! I got some at Aldi's (a cut rate grocery store) for $4.99 they are like crocs and I have worn them all over LA and Auckland and they were soooo comfortable. Unfortunately they are wearing out and I can't find any more. Oh, a bit of trivia, we were looking for some like my comfy ones in New Zealand earlier this year and found flip flops were call Jandals.

they are kind of for at the beach- camping- when you are taking showers in camp ground showers and don't want to go in bare feet- when you come out of the lake- want to walk up to the car- you slide into them- they are for those (moments) in the summer time- they have no benifits when it comes to foot health- they are simply an easy slip into for a minute foot protector- protecting your feet from (community fungus) gravel roads- ect.
used to be sold as (shower shoes) somewhere along the way people decided they were great for beach/camping wear- from there over the years i bet lots of people have (tried) to wear them as if they were a pair of shoes- but as you found out- they are not- and were never meant to be. hopefully you can use up the 'bunch' you bought.
my granddaughters buy them for $1 a pair at the dollar store- then decorate the straps with fabrics or yarns- they get very creative with them- and they share them with their friends when they go to the beach.
the rubber ones are made for beaching and showering, but i have a pair made of calfskin that cost plenty that i've worn for several years now and won't give them up until one of us dies - me or them. i also wear silver and beaded ones with dressy
summer patio pants. so some are beachy, some are casual, some are semi-dressy and some are very dressy. they're not really all the same. yeah, you do have to get used to that strip of leather between your toes. for a lot of people it isn't worth it.
i've been wearing them since i was about 16, when they were called zoris or thongs. my dd started when she was 12. we both still do. not the rubber kind, they hurt. and the toe thing pops out.

I had some that sound like that, only we called them "tatami sandals." That was back about 1980.

I have had much foot surgery, and find that SPERRy(the boat shoe company)makes a WONDERFUL flip flop.... has a good sole, some styles have a round tube over the big toe. , and a good arch. also, SPEEDO is a good brand.thye have a cloth piece between the toes. Both are pricey, in the 30 or 35 dollar range, but can wear them all day long and no back aches either....... also, NO flip flop sound when walking....... jacie
