the French say "occupez-vous de vos oignons", translated literally means take care of your own onions!
I wonder how that came into use? Did nosey people give unwanted advice as to when their neighbour should pull the onions in their garden? And then it grew from there..

I always liked the response of "If you'll forgive me for not answering, I'll forgive you for asking."

When someone I don't know very well, or don't want to know very well, asks me a personal question, I just say "Why are you asking?" It usually leaves them speechless or searching for an answer. Gets those busy bodies every time. Works for me.

I always marvel how members on this board can find information on anything and so fast. That was interesting!

One that's worked for me is "Is there a reason you need to know?" Stops them every time. May not promote a friendship but I'm amazed at people's rudeness at times.
