You should practice a few times before this info is needed.
I used to tape the handle and have a sign "NO WATER" as a reminder too. Just DH and I now. :|

Okay, just ran to the grocery store. Wandered quite a bit wondering what to buy... ended up with alot of Gatorade, chips, popcorn, donuts, muffins and the makings for PB&J. Figured 2 adults and 2 kids could survive on that for 5 days.
Very different from my typical diet of fruits, veggies, healthy protein and nearly no processed foods.

Hope it just skirts out to sea instead of hitting us.

I'm just outside Ocean City NJ. We are under a mandatory evacuation tomorrow. I took one load of stuff to my brother's place, which is where I will be going, tonight. Took one of my cats tonight, will take other two tomorrow. Have to also take my mother. My other brother will be bringing my mother's three cats. He lives with her. Tomorrow will be interesting with six cats, seven people and a hurricane.
Don't really expect flooding here but wind damage could be bad. Hope power doesn't go out but brother has an RV that he can either run power from or cook in. Anyway, anyone in the storm path. Stay safe.

I did manage to get some sandwich meat and I will go to the storage facility tomorrow and get a large cooler to keep stuff cold if need be. Hubby will be filling the propane tank, although I don't really have anything to cook on it except hot dogs.

I should probably get hamburg, but I don't want it to go bad.

Last big hurricane (BOB) in 1991 we lost power for 5 days and it was rough. We had fish tanks then and I kept taking the fish back and forth to work to keep the filter working for them.

    Now, it's just two cats.
My husband is from Florida and knows what to do in hurricanes and has made sure that I know just incase we ever happen to get one in the Pacific Northwest.
Stock up on lots of tuna fish, canned ravioli, spam, canned spaghetti there is lots of stuff like that.AND lots of bottled water. If all else fails and you are unable to cook anything, these can be eaten directly out of a can, they may not taste the best but...ITS FOOD. We have a "stash" of this kind of stuff I hope everyone keeps safe. You can live without food for days, but you can only live without water for abouty 3 days. So make sure to have tons of water. You can buy 5 gallon jugs of water at most stores that go on water machines...buy several and keep them on hand. We have 1 full one at all times plus the one that is on the water machine. Thank the Good Lord, we live in Oregon where we don't get hurricanes and tornados. God Bless everyone. Keep safe.

Fill all bathtubs with water - to use for flushing, hand washing, etc. Here on the Gulf Coast we start our hurricane readiness every June 1. Foods that need no cooking, plenty of drinking water, pet food, chocolate, liquor, an extra of all presciptions that are needed! There are lots of websites that provides lists of necessities for such emergencies. I know this is all pretty much foreign to East Coast folks. I wish you well!

ICE...a couple of huge ice chests full. I freeze gallon jugs of water and leave in the freezer. In case of power failure, they will help keep food in freezer and fridge cold for several days. We had lots of neighborhood barbeques during weeks after Hurricane Ike, as we all cooked food from our freezers. A gasoline generator wouldn't hurt..noisy but will at least keep freezer and fridge running.

Other people are preparing for the hurricane, I'm preparing for boredom!

In all seriousness, I wish everyone in the path, minimum damage, no loss of life or property, and above all, safety!
That is thinking ahead...... At least it will help you pass the time but we still pray that it won't be as bad as they hope.....
East Coast is in my prayers

We keep an emergency kit on hand at all times. Canned foods for 7 days. Several gallons of water. Food for all the critters. Prescriptions are kept in a kit that we can grab quick and add to everything. When the freezer gets low we fill the empty spaces with milk jugs of water. They'll keep things cold if the power goes out.

We had power go out for a winter storm a couple years back. My husband would say, "Wish I could have some hot soup" Out comes my pop can stove. I'm a camper/backpacker. I'm ready for everything!!!

I also live on the Gulf Coast, so am familiar with hurricanes. All the advice given is good. Most importantly, stay safe!
