My FIL used to catch snapping turtles when they retired to Lake Placid, FL. MIL cooked turtle soup for us once when we visited from Montana - we all ate the soup (kids were under strict orders not to hurt Grandma's feelings) and surprisingly, we all liked the soup - must have been the vegetables & all the seasonings thrown in the pot.

ate turtle when I was in China. It wasn't too bad. Then I had turtle soup. Of course most generally you don't ask what anything is, you just eat it. If you don't like it, you can spit it out.

Turtle is so good, When we have gotten them, we have soaked them, alive, in a tub of water for at least a week, changing the water every day to get any mud out of the turtles system. Then cut it into small pieces, dredged in seasoned flour and deep fat fried. Yum Yum

LOL...we had a huge one coming across the barn lot the other day..my silly DH just had to go out there and try to flip him over with a stick...couldn't do it-he is a tormenter. Anyway, the turtle got mad, but (probably a she going to lay her eggs) she went on her way unharmed.

I guess you just have to try everything at least once.

There wouldn't be any recipe tasty enough for me to even try it. I had turtles as pets as a kid.

My MIL told about a hired hand they had when she was growing up who went fishing while they were in church one Sunday morning. He caught a turtle and by the time they came home he had butchered, cut it up it up into pieces and fried it. Those gathered around the 'dinner' table thought it tasted something like seven different kinds of meat and they all thought it was good. I grew up in a fishing family in eastern KS so learned to eat a variety of fish, including eel. Don't recall ever having turtle but it was probably on the table at some point in time. I'm a bit more picky about what I eat now!!!

Taste like chicken lol. Snappers get huge and can be pretty hateful. I used to have an old guy that got them out of our creek. It was interesting watching him clean them. I would like to have ducks but can't cause of the turtles. As far as I know snapping turtles are the only ones people usually eat. Beleive me if you ever seen a snapper they are not, nor could ever be pets. If I needed to I could eat turtle, times are hard ,you never know....I think it is good to teach kids survival skills and the many ways in which we can "live off the land"
And yes they will kill your chickens, like I said that is why I can't have ducks. Well At least I don't have a goose problem as they have become overpopulated around here.
